Composites Growth Initiative

About CGI

The mission of the Composites Growth Initiative (CGI) is to promote and expand the use and understanding of composite materials. This is accomplished through specific goals:

  • To enhance the market presence of composites before potential end-users (or those that may specify their use) through an effective public relations program;
  • To enhance market acceptance of composites through active participation in the development of, or action on, relevant codes and standards;
  • To strengthen interaction between the academic community (colleges, universities, vocational schools, and high schools) and the composites industry;
  • To encourage the ACMA Divisions, Alliances, and Councils to positively affect their markets by identifying needs and taking action to address those needs;
  • To investigate potential market opportunities that identify future composites markets to help grow the composites industry.

New! CGI Codes, Standards, and Specifications

New ANSI Standard

The ACMA Pultrusion Industry Council has developed a new industry document titled: Code of Standard Practice for Fabrication and Installation of Pultruded FRP Structures to provide recommendations for construction contract documents, as well as procedures and practices for the fabrication and installation of pultruded FRP structures that is followed by the pultrusion industry manufacturers.

The Code of Standard Practice is an important component to the recently completed LRFD PreStandard for pultruded composite structures.  The ACMA Composites Growth Initiative established a new committee called the LRFD Relevant Committee to undertake the process of converting this industry document into a ANSI standard.  ACMA submitted a PINS to ANSI for Standards Action Public Review Request, after announcing its intent to create a national standard based on the standard practice code.

For information concerning this petition, or the ANS process, contact: Secretariat, Larry Cox, CCM, CCT-I at lcox1225@gmail.com or (Ph) 740-928-3286 or John Busel, ACMA Director – Composites Growth Initiative at jbusel@acmanet.org.

Composites Growth Initiative: Opportunities for Rebuilding the Gulf Coast

Presenter: Charlie McClaskey, Norac, Inc. – Chairman – CGI Industry Outreach Committee

Abstract - The ACMA Composites Growth Initiative recently completed an investigation to evaluate reconstruction opportunities in the Gulf Coast region. The flurry of successive hurricanes coupled with flooding has caused 90,000 sq. miles to be destroyed including 1.2 million homes and 125,000 businesses. This presentation will report on attractive product applications for hurricane resistant construction providing new opportunities for the composites industry.

CGI Activity

The Composites Growth Initiative, Industry Outreach Subcommittee, as a service to ACMA members, is investigating new market opportunities. Specifically, CGI is helping interested members to better understand the emerging opportunity for FRP composites in rebuilding the Gulf Coast. The Outreach Subcommittee believes that there may be a large and profitable potential to use durable, high-performance composite products that would mitigate hurricane and storm damage to homes and other structures in the future.
ACMA members can learn more about this market opportunity by reading the reports below.
