ACMA Congressional Alert – OSHA Fire Safety Standard for Open Molding
Write to your U.S. Congressman today to urge support of legislation requiring
OSHA to update the fire protection requirements for composites manufacturing!
Representative Candice Miller (R-MI), chair of the House Government Reform
Subcommittee, introduced on July 12 legislation – H.R. 3255 – that
will require OSHA to update the flammable liquid spray application standard
at 29 CFR 1910.107 to reflect the current version of NFPA 33. Representative
Mark Souder (R-IN) is cosponsor of the bill.
The current OSHA standard at 1910.107 is based on an outdated version of the
National Fire Protection Association Standard for Spray Application of Flammable
or Combustible Materials (NFPA 33). Many composite manufacturers have been cited
for failing to comply with the outdated OSHA rule, which contains infeasible
and highly expensive requirements that do not reflect an up-to-date assessment
of composite manufacturing hazards.
The current version of the NFPA standard contains effective, feasible and affordable
provisions that are appropriate for the actual fire and explosion hazards at
typical composite open molding operations.
Please fax a letter to your Congressman calling on him or her to support
passage of H.R. 3255. Please fax the letter to your US Representative,
not to your Senators at this time. Please also fax a copy of your letter to
John Schweitzer at ACMA, at 815.301.5542. If you have questions or comments,
please contact John at 734.622.0162 or jschweitzer@acmanet.org.
