FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University of Texas Doctoral Candidate Sarah Orton Wins
Gary B. Multanen/Composites Manufacturing Magazine Scholarship
October 12, 2006, (Arlington Va.) — With her research paper
“Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite Anchors to Increase Capacity
of CFRP Sheets Bonded to Reinforced Concrete,” Ph.D-candidate Sarah
Orton, who attends the University of Texas at Austin, has won the 2006 Gary
B. Multanen/Composites Manufacturing magazine scholarship. Orton
will provide a poster session of her research at Composites Manufacturing
(CM) magazine’s booth #1720 from 11am-12pm, Wednesday, October
18 and Thursday, October 19 from 1pm-2pm at COMPOSITES & POLYCON
2006 in St. Louis.
“We’re very impressed with Sarah’s research,”
said CM Editor, Andrew Rusnak. “Especially with the push
toward innovative composites solutions and the challenge of the nation’s
deteriorating infrastructure. She attacked a common problem of de-bonding
and tested what looks to be a viable solution.”
Gary Multanen is a two-time past president and founding father of the
American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA). Composites Manufacturing
is one of two magazines published by the ACMA. Orton’s research will
be featured in the October issue of CM which will be distributed
at COMPOSITES & POLYCON 2006. She also will receive
a $1,000 check presented by ACMA’s board of directors.
“This year we received more applicants than ever in the short three-year
history of the scholarship program,” Rusnak continued. “There
were many competitive papers from colleges and universities around the United
States. The judges had a difficult time, but made the best decision.”
Orton set up a test plan and measured results of “tension in CFRP
sheet per anchorage scheme,” and concluded that “CFRP anchors
enable fuller utilization of the tensile capacity of a CFRP sheet and thereby
further increases the capacity of a CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete
beam.” After taking her doctorate in Civil Engineering in May 2007,
she will seek a career in academia, with the goal of becoming a professor
involved in both teaching and research.
