ACMA and CF MAGAZINE ANNOUNCE WINNER OF GARY B. MULTANEN APPLIED RESEARCH STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

September 21, 2004 (ARLINGTON, VA) – CF Magazine, the official magazine of the American Composites Manufactures Association (ACMA), announces this year’s winner of the Gary B. Multanen Applied Research Scholarship. Jordan E. Kiesser of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., is majoring in Industrial Technology: Vehicle Design and Plastics Engineering Technology. Jordan will be awarded a $1000 scholarship, a trip to COMPOSITES 2004, in Tampa, Fla. to present his research, and will have his paper published in CF Magazine.

“I applied to Western and started attending in the fall of 1999 with the intended major of Industrial Technology in Vehicle Design. After taking my first course in plastics, I decided to double major in Plastics Engineering Technology, recognizing the advantages that a strong knowledge of materials gives a designer,” Kiesser explains. Jordan Kiesser submitted a winning research paper entitled, Novel Process For Manufacturing Expandable Carbon Fiber Honeycomb.

Kiesser also plays Rugby at Western where he has served as the team captain, as well as a year as the Club President and VP. This year’s winner of the Scholarship plans to take a job working in research and development. Upon graduation he will be looking for employment in the composites industry, and in the future, plans to go back to school to get a masters and possibly doctorate. “At this point in my life my career goal is to work on creating a new form of transportation to end our tremendous dependency on fossil fuels and the degrading effects that they have on the environment and the global community.”

At COMPOSITES 2004, Jordan will receive an award and the $1000 scholarship from Gary B. Multanen, President of Best Bath Systems, Boise, Idaho, and Past President of ACMA. Multanen, founding father and charter board member of ACMA believes that, “Education is the corner stone of leading an active, productive, successful life. The amount of money you make does not measure your worth. One measure of your worth is setting goals and achieving them. Jordan Kiesser is an excellent example of the many young scholars today who will be leading our industry in the not too distant future.” Jordan will give a 25-minute paper presentation on his research Thursday at 2:00 pm.

To find out more about the Gary B. Multanen/CF Magazine Applied Research Student Scholarship, log on to www.cfmagazine.org or call ACMA headquarters at 703.525.0511. Information on how to apply for next year’s scholarship will be available at COMPOSITES 2004, CF Magazine booth #827.
