ACMA Enters CCT Curriculum Agreement with Vaal University of Technology

March 14, 2005 (Arlington, VA) – Building on similar agreements with the Georgia Aviation Technical College and Honolulu Community College, the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) has entered into an academic agreement with South Africa’s Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the second largest technical university in the country, that will allow Vaal to assimilate ACMA’s Certified Composites Technician (CCT) program into its curriculum.

“Vaal University of Technology, one of the leading higher education institutions in South Africa, empowers our stakeholders, including our students and industry partners to rise to new heights,” said Dean of Vaal University, Prof HJ de Jager. “The CCT course is an ideal opportunity to uplift composite workmanship in South Africa to internationally recognized standards. Through this partnership, VUT will address the human resources needs of the country, which will ensure a better life for all and help us along in our endeavor to become globally competitive.”

By entering into an academic agreement with ACMA, instructors will teach the CCT course and administer examinations to students in conjunction with VUT’s existing composites curriculum.

“In what is becoming a trend with academic institutions that support the composites industry, we are delighted that Vaal University of Technology has chosen to provide its students with the Certified Composites Technician (CCT) training program,” said ACMA Executive Director Missy Henriksen, CCT-A. “ACMA’s charter is, of course, to support the educational needs of the entire composite community. We do this by looking ahead as much as possible, anticipating industry needs and providing comprehensive solutions and support designed to advance quality manufacturing of composites products. CCT contributes greatly to this goal.”

“It will empower the South African composites industry to work to U.S. standards—for possible exports to the U.S. and Europe — but primarily for delivering more professionally manufactured products to our local markets,” added Jan Jooste, CCT-I, and Head of Iscor Innovation Centreat, Vaal University of Technology.

ACMA’s seven Certified Composites Technician (CCT) programs have now certified over 1,900 composites professionals. ACMA created the CCT program in response to the industry’s need for uniform training in technical skills. The focus of the CCT training is the fundamental technology used to produce a wide variety of products using the open molding process. The goal of the CCT programs is to enhance the overall professionalism of individuals who work with composites by raising their levels of skill and knowledge.
