ACMA's Risk Communication Program is designed to give owners and managers the tools they need to inform and reassure their employees and plant neighbors about chemical health risks.
The program is available to all composites manufacturers and free to ACMA members. Suppliers and distributors are strongly encouraged to recommend the program to all customers and to direct them to this ACMA Web page for ordering information.
Since the program was developed with the significant financial support of ACMA member companies, non-members may purchase the kit for $1000. The non-member fee can be credited to the first year of ACMA dues, if the company joins ACMA within 5 days of receiving the program.

The Toolkit included the following components (in English or Spanish):
- Toolkit Manual: Simple tips for getting the most out of using the Toolkit.
- Q+A About Styrene: Educate people about styrene’s presence in the environment, present the uses and benefits of composite products made from styrene (it helps strengthen armor and helmets for U.S. military troops, etc.) and more.
- Customizable PowerPoint Presentation: You don’t have to write the content. Instead, you can present 17 professionally developed slides immediately. Add your company’s logo and tagline to customize it to meet your individual company needs.
- Key Messages About Styrene: The key talking points you’ll need about the issue, stressing that styrene has been used safely in composites manufacturing for half a century and that hundreds of thousands of people have worked safely in styrene-related industries.
- Worker Handout: Employees are concerned, and this document helps you communicate to them openly about styrene.
- Glossary of Terms: The most commonly used words and terms related to styrene and what they mean.
- Poster: Reassure your employees about the safety of styrene. Put this poster in your break room or wherever people gather.
- Video: This 5-minute video on styrene health risk can be presented on a laptop/LCD projector, or copied to a DVD for use in meetings with workers and neighbors. (English only.)

Principles that support effective risk communication
Employees and plant neighbors want to be reassured by someone they know and trust, who accepts their concerns as real and valid.
They don't really want to be confused with obscure toxicology and science terms, but rather are looking for credible information to support assurances that they are working and living in a safe environment. Owners and plant managers are the most credible communicators. Since they work in the plant and often live in the community, owners and managers have the credibility needed to effectively communicate with exposed workers and community members. |
|
A good starting point is a well managed plant.
Besides the obvious need to comply with the applicable regulations, owners and managers benefit from investing in health, safety and environmental performance. Being a good employer and good community member has real benefit.
Clean and safe workplaces, attractive plant exteriors, full compliance with permits and applicable regulations, prevention of odor complaints, and good community image all contribute to good operations and they also increase the effectiveness of the communication program. |
