Previous Western Chapter Scholarship Winners

ACMA's 2005 Western Chapter Scholarship Winners

Jacqueline Cervantes, sponsored by Norac, Inc. in Azusa, California, graduated from the International Polytechnic High School in Pomona, Calif. Cervantes now attends the University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif. where she is majoring in Education and working towards a credential in Special Education. Ultimatley, Cervantes hopes to teach students who are deaf and continue to be active in the Special Olympics or Deaflympics.

Andrew J. Strong is sponsored by Brigham Young University in Sandy, Utah. Strong is studying for a BS in manufacturing engineering technology in the management track, which gives him a minor in business. With a focus in plastics and composite materials and processing, Strong plans to become an expert in international manufacturing. Strong has had intern opportunities in both Cambodia and the Philippines that require his knowledge of lean manufacturing and quality control, among others.


ACMA's 2004 Western Chapter Scholarship Winners

Jackson Hartman, sponsored by Interplastic Corporation, is a student of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Hartman graduated from Temecula Valley High School in Temecula, California. He participated in varsity swimming and icehockey in addition to various community service activities.

Sabreena Newman is sponsored by Ashland Distribution Company. A graduate of Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, Newman began her sports medicine major this fall at Oregon State University. She plans to become a certified athletic trainer and possibly attend medical school after graduating from OSU. Newman was involved in the National Honor Society, golf, volleyball, and various high school committee and community service activities.

Remy Labesque — California College of Arts and Crafts — San Franscisco, CA — Remy is currently a student majoring in Industrial Design and hopes to pursue a career designing structures that blend efficiency, conservation, functionality, and aesthetic beauty and harmony. He is an active member of the Center for Public Life in Oakland, California, a community-based organization of people interested in art, working together to improve the local community. Through this organization, Remy participates actively in several ongoing community service projects, including "learning gardens" for a local elementary school, a dormitory planning forum, and a community sidewalk festival. At age 15, Remy started his own art business, Remy Art Studios. Through Remy Art Studios, he has produced such works as illustrations for a local winery, letterheads and architectural renderings for a local bed and breakfast inn, and poster designs for local music groups. Remy regards his most important community contribution to be his involvement in the Sonoma Valley COWS! Program. COWS! is an organization that brings together artists and the agricultural community through the display of cast-fiberglass painted cow sculptures presented through Sonoma County. Through the auction of these cows, the program channels much-needed funds to non-profit organizations in the Sonoma community.

Kristin Mooney —University of Idaho — Boise, ID — Kristin Mooney is a rising first year student at the University of Idaho, beginning her studies in the fall of 2003. She is a graduate of Centennial High School with a 3.91 G.P.A. She has chosen a major in biology and hopes to pursue a career in the field of science and medicine. Kristin is interested in Sports Medicine, as she was actively involved in her high school's sports medicine program for two years. Kristin worked at Blockbuster Video and a local cleaners throughout her high school years, and was active in her high school sports programs — including the basketball and soccer teams. She volunteered for Soroptimist of Idaho, through which she participated in community activities like "Rake up Boise" and "Adopt-a-Highway." She is the recipient of many honors and distinctions, including a member of the National Honor Society, the Honors Science Award, and the Senior Scholar Award.
